Join the ACT Reconciliation Council

Released 30/08/2019

The ACT Reconciliation Council is looking to renew its membership to help promote reconciliation across Canberra.

Rachel Stephen-Smith, the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs today announced the opening of Expressions of Interest to join the Council and emphasised the call for wide community involvement.

"The ACT Reconciliation Council plays an integral role in promoting Reconciliation Day and connecting Canberrans with information, activities and opportunities to learn more about the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories across Australia.

"Reconciliation is a journey we should all be part of. We're looking for leaders from all sectors to help promote this conversation," said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Council members work with the community to continue the conversation around Reconciliation and to encourage people to celebrate and learn more about the histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Council members will also support the ACT Government to develop a program of activities taking place in the lead up to Reconciliation Day, the first Australian public holiday to be held in recognition of Reconciliation.

Chris Bourke, Co-Chair of the ACT Reconciliation Council said, "we are looking for Canberrans who are interested in and passionate about Reconciliation. We are looking for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous people who want to get together and have some fun and work on Reconciliation here in the ACT."

Genevieve Jacobs, Co-Chair of the ACT Reconciliation Council said, "we are looking to get more people involved in the ACT Reconciliation Council and we would love for you to put your hand up. We want to make this a whole of community conversation - Reconciliation is everyone's business."
