New bulk billing GP opens in Tuggeranong

Released 27/08/2019

A new bulk billing GP in Tuggeranong, opened today by Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith, will increase access to affordable general practice services in Canberra's South.

The new interchange Health Co-operative, located on Anketell Street, has nine consultation rooms and will deliver bulk billed healthcare to members. The Practice has six doctors (two full time, four part time) and a nurse practitioner. This will increase to 15 doctors when fully staffed, delivering up to 35,000 consultations a year.

The Interchange Health Co-operative received $500,000 from the ACT Government 'Bulk Billing General Practices Grant Fund' in 2018, which enabled the purpose-built refurbishment of the practice.

Minister Stephen-Smith said the new practice will provide outstanding health care for Tuggeranong now and into the future.

"The opening of the Interchange Health Co-operative is a tangible example of how the ACT Government has delivered on its election commitment to increase the availability of bulk bulling General Practices in Canberra’s South.

"The ACT Government supports a quality health system where public health services are delivered alongside those of non-government organisations. By working together, we are best able to meet the health needs of the community.

"The health of Canberrans will always be a priority for the ACT Labor Government. Access to affordable health care is important to the liveability of our city and we will continue to deliver healthcare, where and when Canberrans need it," said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Dr Tuck Meng Soo OAM, Practice Principal at Interchange Health Co-operative said the grant enabled her practice to offer quality, holistic care for the local community, delivered by staff who care about their patients.

"One of our key focuses is delivering quality care for vulnerable people in the community, offering medical services for people with drug and alcohol dependency, issues of sexuality and gender diversity, and chronic and mental health conditions," said Dr Soo.
