Supporting new and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organisations

Released 30/05/2019

Two Aboriginal organisations will receive funding in the ACT Government’s New and Emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organisations Program (NEO Program), an example of the Government’s commitment to supporting and empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations and businesses.

The NEO Program provides financial support to businesses and community organisations that develop and deliver culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT.  Tjillari Justice Aboriginal Corporation and Yeddung Mura Aboriginal Cultural Corporation have been funded in the NEO program, sharing $25,000 in financial support.

Tjillari Justice Aboriginal Corporation is a research and evidence-based transformational social enterprise, established to break the cycle of inter-generational offending in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the ACT. Participation in the NEO Program will allow Tjillari Justice Aboriginal Corporation to provide more support to program volunteers and to purchase ICT equipment to run training programs and workshops.

The Yeddung Mura Aboriginal Corporation aims to build strong families and strong communities by delivering services and programs that minimise the risk of previous offenders returning to prison. Funding for Yeddung Mura will support the organisation to market their programs, upgrade their financial management tools, and develop more partnerships and training.

Participation in the NEO Program will allow these organisations to grow, expand their reach and continue delivering culturally appropriate services to achieve better outcomes for Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The NEO Program supports the significant focus area of Economic Participation, outlined in the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2019 – 2028. This focus area supports the growth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses and community service organisations.

Establishing the NEO Program was an election commitment made by ACT Labor in 2016.

The 2019-20 NEO Program will be open for applications in the new financial year. All eligible organisations are encouraged to apply.
