The University of Canberra Hospital (UCH) has today celebrated one year of treating inpatients at its state-of-the-art campus in Bruce.
More than 2000 people have been cared for at UCH and there have been more than 10,000 visits to UCH clinics.
As Canberra's first dedicated rehabilitation hospital, UCH moves patients out of an acute hospital setting and into an environment that promotes recovery and encourages independence.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith marked the first anniversary of inpatient operations at UCH today by thanking the more than 300 staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide the highest level of care for Canberrans.
"The University of Canberra Hospital is a safe, supportive place that provides care for adults who are experiencing mental illness or recovering from surgery, stroke, illness or injury," Minister Stephen-Smith said.
"A patient's environment can have a big impact on the success of their recovery. Moving services out to this modern, dedicated facility has resulted in better patient support and care.
"The specialised services and multi-disciplinary teams available at the University of Canberra Hospital, along with individually tailored care and programs, are critical to meeting the current and future health demands of our city."
At capacity, UCH will provide 140 overnight rehabilitation beds, including 20 adult mental health beds. In addition to overnight beds, the hospital offers 75 day places for mental health and rehabilitation services.
In 12 months, UCH has:
- served more than 65,000 inpatient meals
- provided 4,400 treatments in multidisciplinary clinics
- answered 12,000 calls through the Help Desk, and
- captured and reused approximately 44,000 kWh of solar energy.
In collaboration with the University of Canberra, UCH is also developing as a centre for research, innovation and education.
"Through its partnership with the University of Canberra and the co-location of the Clinical Education and Research Centre, UCH is supporting the training of Canberra's future health professionals across disciplines including nursing, medicine and allied health," Minister Stephen-Smith said.
"The University of Canberra has been rocketing up the global ratings of young universities based on its growing research capabilities.
"The state-of-the-art environment at UCH encourages collaboration and the development of projects and programs that will deliver new knowledge and improved health outcomes for the Canberra community."
