Voice. Treaty. Truth – NAIDOC Week begins in Canberra

Released 08/07/2019

Canberra is the national focus city for NAIDOC Week 2019, providing an opportunity for all Canberrans to come together in recognition and celebration of the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future reflects three key elements to the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The theme acknowledges that for generations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have sought to be the leaders and decision makers of their own lives and futures.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith said this year’s theme encouraged all Australians to engage in a conversation about truth-telling.

“NAIDOC week is not only an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but to have meaningful conversations with one another about the true history of Australia and the ongoing quest of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for a Treaty and formal truth-telling process.

“To truly move forward and build a better future together, we need to understand and acknowledge our shared past.”

Canberrans will have the opportunity to participate in a number of activities and events throughout NAIDOC Week including:

  • NAIDOC in the North, Gungahlin – a free, family friendly event featuring children activities and entertainment throughout the day
  • NAIDOC Week Community Celebration, Woden – live music, performances and art displays

“This is very much a community driven week, many of the events and activities are hosted by community groups, schools and organisations who want to celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and share their cultures with the wider community.

“I really encourage all Canberrans to get involved in NAIDOC Week and take a moment to reflect on this year’s theme Voice. Treaty. Truth.”

NAIDOC Week is held from 7 – 14 July.  To learn more about the week and events on offer, visit: https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/naidoc-week-events
