Weston Creek Walk-in Centre officially launches

Released 12/12/2019

Canberra’s newest nurse-led Walk-in Centre will open its doors this week, providing free and accessible health care to Weston Creek and surrounding communities.

Located in the heart of the Weston Creek, the ACT’s fourth centre delivers on ACT Labor’s 2016 election commitment and invests nearly $5 million refurbishing the site of the existing community health centre to provide a state-of-the-art purpose-built health facility.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the opening of the Weston Creek Walk-in Centre was an example of the ACT Labor Government’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible healthcare where Canberrans need it.

“Healthcare will always be a priority for our government, and we’ll continue to invest in health services and infrastructure across the territory.

“Canberra’s Walk-in Centres provide people with access to health services closer to home. The Walk-in Centre will be able to treat people who have minor injuries and illnesses, including sprains and strains, every day of the year.

“This new Centre will go a long way to enhancing public health care that members of the local community can access every day of the year.” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

More than 10 full time equivalent nursing positions and 4 full time equivalent administration staff will join the Weston Creek Walk-in Centre team.

“Our network of Walk-in Centre’s is a real success story for Canberrans and the ACT Labor Government, one we can be very proud of.

“The ACT was the first jurisdiction to embrace this model of healthcare and we’ll continue to build on its success across Canberra, with the opening of the Inner North Walk-in centre next year,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Canberra’s Walk-in Centres are more popular than ever with more than 17,000 people treated from July to September in 2019.

In additional to creation of a new Walk-in Centre, phase 2 of the refurbishment will provide additional space for Maternal and Child Services, maternity and community nursing planned for completion in early 2020. This additional space will provide for 15 treatment rooms in total.

The Weston Creek Walk-in Centre is located at 24 Parkinson Street, Weston Creek.

The new Dickson Community Health Centre will include a Walk-in Centre and is due for completion in late 2020. For more information about Walk in Centres, visit walkincentre.act.gov.au
