Cancer Consumer Reference Group announced on World Cancer Day

Released 04/02/2020

Consumers, carers and community members are being invited to join the inaugural Cancer Consumer Reference Group this World Cancer Day.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith has today announced the establishment of the group to increase participation by consumers and carers in the planning and delivery of cancer services across the Territory.

Members will provide cancer services related strategic advice to Canberra Health Services, identify and advise on priority areas and issues of concern and help to facilitate communication between Canberra Health Services, consumers and carers.

“Cancer treatment often happens over a prolonged period, giving those going through treatment and their carers, family and friends an intimate experience of how our cancer services operate and how they can be improved.

“This group is an opportunity for us to meaningfully engage with people who have the experience, knowledge and understanding of the issues associated with cancer services and treatment in the ACT,” said Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“Consumers, carers and families already contribute significantly to the planning and governance aspects of Canberra Health Services. The establishment of this group will provide the Cancer team with a permanent cancer consumer reference group that represents the community and their needs,” said Cathie O'Neill, Executive Director of Cancer and Ambulatory Support.

Every weekday, staff at the Canberra Region Cancer Centre treat an average of 100 patients, conduct 110 medical appointments and provided 50-100 chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

“Facing a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be a challenge physically, mentally and emotionally. This World Cancer Day, I thank the Canberra Health Services staff who provide exceptional cancer care and support to our community every day.

“Their passion for delivering exceptional care to people living with cancer, their high level of commitment and their outstanding skills are appreciated by all in our community,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.
