Investing in infrastructure and maintenance at Canberra’s public hospitals

Released 09/09/2020

The ACT Government will invest $12.5 million to improve Information and communication technology, upgrade infrastructure and fast track maintenance programs at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said funding will support critical infrastructure projects at the hospital, engage local contractors and support up to 100 local jobs.

“There are more than 7,000 Canberrans working across our health system and hundreds of patients and visitors coming into our hospitals every day. This funding is part of a series of investments to ensure Canberra’s health facilities provide a modern, safe and efficient environment for healthcare workers, patients and visitors.

“Maintaining and upgrading IT and building infrastructure is key to ensuring our healthcare staff have the right equipment, tools and technology support in place to provide exceptional healthcare to our community,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Calvary Public Hospital Bruce will receive funding to upgrade the fire safety system and undertake electrical upgrades, including a new distribution board.

Other works at Calvary Public Hospital include:

  • Upgrades to nurse call and medical emergency buttons
  • Refurbishing the endoscopy suite
  • Replacement of Access Control doors

ICT network improvements will include upgrading WIFI across the hospital campus in preparation of the future roll out of the ACT Digital Health Record.

Minister Stephen-Smith said while investments are being made to improve Calvary Public Hospital, ACT Health will keep working with stakeholders including Calvary to progress the northside hospital scoping study.

“Canberra’s northside will continue to grow with new residents in Gungahlin, Ginninderry and Belconnen Town Centre. We are planning for city-wide health infrastructure to ensure Canberrans have access to the right healthcare, when and where they need it.

“Northside hospital infrastructure was recognised as a priority in the 2019 Infrastructure Plan and we have been undertaking early work to support the ongoing delivery of efficient, accessible and high-quality hospital services  for residents across Canberra’s north. This requires careful planning and consultation, including with our important partners at Calvary Public Hospital and the Little Company of Mary.

“The Northside hospital project will now move to the next stage of planning, where the ACT Government will consult with consumers, clinicians and the local community to identify the best option to meet healthcare needs in Canberra’s north and across the Territory.

“Key infrastructure projects have continued to progress this year across ACT health facilities, despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

“It is important to keep these works progressing, keeping Canberrans employed and ensuring our health system meets the growing needs of our city now, and into the future,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.
