The Canberra Hospital expansion continues to gain momentum with the demolition of the former CIT Woden campus nearing completion. A tender has been issued to market for contractors to build a temporary staff carpark at the site.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said delivering more parking would make the hospital campus as user friendly as possible while the ACT Government works to deliver a range of hospital expansion projects, including a new emergency, surgical and critical care building.
"The new temporary carpark will provide capacity for more than 1100 staff vehicles, freeing up public parking on the hospital campus. It will help to alleviate parking and traffic pressures within the Canberra Hospital campus during construction.
"While the preparatory works for the Canberra Hospital expansion are underway, we are taking steps to ensure staff and patients have access to improved facilities," said Minister Stephen-Smith.
The temporary carpark is one of several refurbishments and building projects happening across the Canberra Hospital campus.
Demolition of Building 8 is now complete and construction work will soon begin for a new four storey building on the site. This building will house the Canberra Sexual Health Centre, Staff Development Unit, Surgical Training Centre and training and teaching rooms for the University of Canberra and Australian National University.
Contractors are currently on site to start works on the reconfiguration of Canberra Hospital's Building 4 to accommodate an updated library and refurbished ANU teaching and training facilities.
Works are also scheduled to commence in September for the refurbishment of Building 3 to accommodate the Child at Risk Health Unit.
The Child at Risk Health Unit will benefit from new accommodation with more space, providing an optimal environment for care. A refurbished courtyard and children's play area will also be built next to building 3.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the ACT Government was investing $7.5 million to partially refurbish buildings 3 and 4, providing a better experience for patients and staff and creating around 60 full time local jobs during construction.
"The pipeline of construction activity generated from projects such as the Canberra Hospital Expansion is providing much needed work for local contractors and workers as the ACT economy continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic," said Minister Stephen-Smith.
The commencement of construction of the temporary carpark, located adjacent to the hospital campus off Hindmarsh Drive, is expected to begin in October and is scheduled for completion in early 2021.
The Request for Tender for design and construction of the carpark is available at www.tenders.act.gov.au.
A successful contractor is expected to be appointed in September.
