Launch of engineering design competition for Arboretum

Released 21/11/2013

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, today launched Freefall Experience Design Ideas, an Engineers Australia competition to design a unique experiential feature for the Engineers Australia Pin Oak Forest at the National Arboretum Canberra.

Engineers Australia was the first organisation to sponsor a forest at the National Arboretum Canberra, with the sponsorship of the Pin Oak Forest in 2009. The forest hosts 600 of the freefall variety of Pin Oaks which is a distinctive cultivar developed through research in Canberra.

"As part of Canberra's centenary celebrations, engineers together with designers and people with a creative flare are invited to design an innovative showpiece feature for the Arboretum's Pin Oak Forest," Mr Rattenbury said.

"From 20 November 2013 until 3 June 2014, Engineers Australia (Canberra Division) will be accepting entries into the Freefall Experience Design Ideas competition as the organisation goes in search of a showpiece that matches the natural beauty of the Arboretum.

"To be able to make a significant contribution to an iconic Canberra destination like the Arboretum is a rare opportunity, and I encourage all interested designers to submit their ideas."

Mr Rattenbury said a visit to the Arboretum is sure to prove inspirational, with a hive of activity always taking place at the site.

"The Arboretum now contains approximately 48,000 rare, threatened and symbolic trees from over 100 different countries.

"Over 400,000 people have visited the site since its opening in February this year to see the range of exotic forests in their establishment stages, take in the views from the Visitor Centre and let the children enjoy the fun factor of the Pod Playground.

"The Pin Oak Forest's design feature is planned to be introduced to the site in 2019 to coincide with Engineers Australia's centenary as a national organisation."
