Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, today launched a new website for Canberrans to easily find outdoor fitness opportunities and share their outdoor fitness experiences.
“There are so many free exercise opportunities in Canberra’s beautiful outdoors for people of all ages and abilities and locating an outdoor fitness facility near you is now easier than ever with the new ‘Find fitness outdoors’ website,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“The ‘Find fitness outdoors’ website provides an array of tools to assist you in your outdoor fitness journey including a mapping function to direct you to sites with outdoor fitness opportunities. These include fitness stations and walking trails as well as things people may not normally use to get active such as play equipment which you could use to break up a walk or run or for parents to use while the kids are playing..
“Short instructional videos featuring the program’s ambassadors – health and fitness guru Lee Campbell and HerCanberra editor Amanda Whitley – demonstrating how to use the equipment are another great feature of the website.
“These videos highlight a great range of the many locations and fitness opportunities across Canberra, and we want the ACT community to share their own outdoor fitness experiences to encourage others get fit and active while having fun in Canberra’s beautiful natural environment.
“Share the cardio, strength and stretching exercises you undertake at your favourite outdoor fitness site by posting a photo or short video to the ‘Find fitness outdoors’ website or uploading it to Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #CBRoutdoors by Monday 20 April 2015. Free personal training sessions are available for the people whose #CBRoutdoors posts generate the most likes or shares on social media.
“We want to see more people using the great outdoor fitness facilities available and hope this new website encourages more Canberrans to lead active lifestyles while also creating a great opportunity for people to enjoy the outdoors..
“Five free group training sessions will also be held throughout March and April at various outdoor fitness sites to allow the community to explore a range of activities to get fit and have fun,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.

• 10 am, Saturday 28 March, John Knight Memorial Park, Belconnen
• 1 pm, Wednesday 1 April, adjacent to Denison Street and Thesiger Court intersection, Deakin
• 10 am, Saturday 11 April, Crace Recreation Park, Narden Street, Crace
• 5.00 pm, Wednesday 15 April, neighbourhood oval off Chifley Place, Chifley
• 10 am, Saturday 18 April, Angas Street road verge, Ainslie.
“So get out there and get active. No matter your age, ability or level of fitness – there is something for everyone. This is a great opportunity to create some positive lifestyle habits with no need for a gym or any specialised equipment or skills.”
Mr Rattenbury said this program has been funded as part of the ACT Government’s Healthy Weight Initiative which is designed to improve the health outcomes of Canberrans.
