New online resource for teachers promotes physical education in schools

Joint Media Release: Shane Rattenbury MLA and Joy Burch MLA

Today Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, and Minister for Education and Training, Joy Burch, launched the new PE Pulse website – a resource to support teachers in the delivery of quality physical education (PE) and to promote connections with community sport and active organisations.

The new website is an initiative of the PE Pulse Network and provides a ‘one stop’ resource for teachers seeking support for PE delivery or wanting to engage external program providers to enhance student experience in being physically active.

At the launch Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, said the importance of PE cannot be understated.

“Encouraging physical activity in children is fundamental to ensure the long term health and prosperity of our community,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“One quarter of children in the ACT are overweight or obese. This new website, which is focussed on helping teachers to deliver best practice PE, will enhance the experiences of students in PE and inspire active lifestyles.

“The ACT Government is committed to joining with our non-government partners to ensure kids develop a love of physical activity and the skills and confidence they need to enjoy being active and form healthy habits early.

“The government’s Healthy Weight Initiative is also promoting physical activity among our young people through the Ride or Walk to School and Kids at Play programs, and the annual Active Kids Challenge,” Minister Rattenbury said.

Minister for Education and Training, Joy Burch, commended the initiative and highlighted the important role physical activity has in our education system.

“Leading an active life is important for all ages, including children. Physical activity, exercise and participation in sports have many benefits for our students including increased motor skills, social inclusion and promoting healthy weight.

“The new PE Pulse website acts like an information hub for teachers for all things related to PE – most notably connections with member provider groups, such as sporting organisations.

“It streamlines opportunities into year groups and links activities with fundamental PE curriculum areas, and I encourage teachers to check out the new resource by connecting with the PE Pulse Network,” Minister Burch said.

The PE Pulse website is the first initiative of the PE Pulse Network, a collaboration of like minded organisations with a similar goal to support high quality delivery of physical activity, physical education and sport experiences in ACT Primary Schools. It has been funded by the annual Sport and Recreation grants program.
