New state-of-the-art athletics track at Woden Park

Released 22/01/2015

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, today toured the newly redeveloped Woden Park sports facility.

The new $7 million facility includes an International Association of Athletics Federation compliant synthetic athletics track, joining the Australian Institute of Sport as the only other one of its kind in the ACT.

"The redevelopment of Woden Park has been enthusiastically welcomed by the local athletics and football communities.  The track is able to be used all year round for both training and competition, as the synthetic athletics track is not affected by extreme weather conditions or the wear and tear that turf tracks are susceptible to," said Mr Rattenbury.

"With football enjoying a surge in popularity across Australia, and our local teams performing so well on the national stage, the newly constructed field is suitable for premier league games and increases Canberra's capacity to host both major sporting events and athletic meets

"The upgrade also includes new "photo finish" capabilities, new jumping pits and throwing cages for field athletics and match play quality floodlighting which is suitable for both athletics and football.

"The redevelopment also includes a new amenities building, security fencing, an internal car park, and an upgrade of the existing pavilion and canteen facilities.

"The accessibility for those with mobility issues has also been improved with the provision of a disability access ramp.

Mr Rattenbury said the new facility will be a great asset to the Canberra community and, in particular, will provide state of the art sporting facilities for the south of Canberra.  The Park will be formally opened to the community in early February with a ceremony that the public will be invited to attend.
