Joint media release: Shane Rattenbury MLA and Bec Cody MLA

Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury today  welcomed the R U OK? Conversation Convoy to Canberra.

The Convoy aims to  inspire everyone, no matter their location, to invest more time in the people  around them and give them the skills, motivation and confidence to start a  conversation with anyone they might be worried about.

“Many in our community  will experience or know someone who will experience mental illness at some time  throughout their lives. Rather than focusing on just mental illness as a  ‘problem’, we should also remember the resilience and strength that supporting  each other can bring,” Minister Rattenbury said.

“We can all play a role in reducing stigma around mental illness by encouraging  those around us to seek help when they need it. If you know a friend having a  tough time, ask them ‘are you ok?’

“You don't have to be an  expert, just a non-judgmental ear and someone who can support them to get the  help they need.”

Bec Cody MLA, representing Chief Minister Andrew Barr, this  afternoon also attended a reception welcoming the Convoy to Canberra. The  reception was hosted by His Excellency General Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK  MC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Lady Cosgrove.

“It is really pleasing to see Canberra included as part of  the R U OK? Conversation Convoy road trip around Australia – and to highlight  this important issue within our community,” Ms Cody said.

“I’d also like to join Minister Rattenbury in commending the  efforts of the R U OK? Team, its supporters and the many volunteers who have  been actively spreading the important message about staying connected and  looking out for one another throughout their journey.”
