An independent review has found the ACT Government’s Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme is making a big dent in Canberra’s energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions
“Canberrans have saved a total of $240 million, including $15 million saved off the energy bills of low income households,” said ACT Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Shane Rattenbury.
“Since coming into effect in 2012, the scheme has benefitted over 70,000 households and businesses – 17,900 of these being low income households and rental properties.
“This scheme requires energy companies to help ACT homes and businesses become more energy efficient. It’s why you’re seeing local energy retailers coming forward with energy-saving tips and discount offers on energy efficient products.
“The independent review carried out earlier this year found the scheme is well and truly achieving its four objectives of encouraging efficient use of energy, reducing emissions, reducing energy use, and reducing costs for households, businesses and low income households.
“As negotiations continue on a new national energy policy, this ACT scheme is proof that we can transition to a more sustainable energy sector, in terms of pollution, provision and pricing,” Minister Rattenbury said.
“On average, the households that have made improvements thanks to this scheme are saving $5.65 per week, with an average saving of $57 per week for participating businesses. The total savings achieved by EEIS is four times greater than the running costs of the scheme.
“The EEIS has helped to cut Canberra’s pollution while we make the transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2020.
“So far the scheme has achieved a carbon dioxide reduction equivalent to removing 144,000 cars off Canberra roads for a year, and in 2017, the EEIS saved enough energy to power over 21,000 Canberra households for a year.
“Energy efficiency is one of the easiest and most effective ways to cut both emissions and prices, so the ACT is now looking at how best to extend the EEIS beyond its current end date of 2020.
“Canberrans win twice through this scheme – reducing their energy needs now to pay smaller bills, and cutting emissions for a safer climate into the future."
