Boost for mental health early intervention services

Released 16/03/2018

The initial $200,000 funding will see headspace deliver ‘onespace’ sessions (solutions-based therapy) for young people aged 12 25.  Sessions are evidence-based, pragmatic and focus on young person’s current needs and concerns.

headspace supports young people aged between 12 and 25 who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns and/or substance use issues, as well as their family and friends.

This service compliments other government funded mental health support for young Canberrans such as the ACT Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Liaison Service, who have a strong working partnership with headspace.

Comments attributable to Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury:

“Mental illness and substance use disorders are some of the most serious health problems in the ACT and are experienced by an estimated one in four young Canberrans each year.

“We know that early access to mental health support can make all the difference, particularly for young people. This new funding will enable headspace counsellors to see more people, reducing wait times and ensuring more young Canberrans have access to this important service when they need it most.

“We’re committed to ensuring there is a continuum of care to address the mental health needs of young people, particularly those at risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation, so that they may reach their full potential.

“An important part of this is breaking down stigma and promoting young people to seek help and adopt positive behaviours around their mental health and wellbeing.”

Comments attributable to headspace CEO Jason Trethowan:

“This funding will greatly benefit young people and their families in Canberra who may be going through a tough time.

“headspace Canberra have created programs and services that are specifically designed for the needs of the local community, with many driven by youth reference group members. These will be able to grow and develop with this welcomed additional funding from the ACT Government.”
