Community road safety grant applications now open

Released 09/04/2018

Canberrans with ideas to make Canberra’s roads safer are encouraged to apply for the latest ACT Road Safety Fund grant program.

Road Safety Minister Shane Rattenbury said the 2018 Road Safety Fund grants program provided an opportunity for the community to help shape priorities in the ACT for improving road safety.

“Improving road safety is important work of government and by partnering with the community we can deliver the best results for Canberrans,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Funding is available for a range of activities including road safety programs and rehabilitation services, road safety education and public awareness campaigns, research and investigations on road safety issues and road safety audits, feasibility studies and evaluations into road design and construction.”

Any individual, community or private organisation, university or government entity can apply for a grant.

The ACT Road Safety Fund Advisory Board will consider applications and recommend projects to the Minister for funding. The Board has identified the following strategic priority areas for projects this year:

  • vulnerable road users
  • improving road safety through greater links with, and promotion of, sustainable transport
  • speed management
  • impaired driving, and
  • young/novice drivers, riders and road users.

“Last year we provided nearly $320,000 in funding to seven projects and we’re looking for new innovative proposals once again,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Through the 2017 grants program, we funded key strategic projects as well as a number of community road safety initiatives including four road safety training programs for senior high school students in the ACT, the first of which will be run in May 2018.

“This is designed to help students develop and practice personalised strategies which will help them to respond positively to challenges on the road, both as drivers and highly influential passengers.”

The road safety grants program is funded by a $2.50 levy charged on all ACT motor vehicle registrations which is allocated to the ACT Road Safety Fund.

Applications close on 23 May 2018 and can be made online at www.justice.act.gov.au.
