Students and teachers from across Canberra today toured some of Canberra’s ‘greenest’ schools to learn about new and innovative sustainability initiatives—lessons that they will take back to their own school environments.
Fifty students and teachers from nine senior schools took part in the Actsmart Eco Tour, visiting two successful Actsmart schools – Merici College and Daramalan College – to learn from their experiences in improving sustainability. Students also heard from students of Telopea Park School and St Francis Xavier College about their environmental projects.
“The Actsmart Schools Eco Tour gets students to teach other students how to get the whole school involved in taking action for the environment,” Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said.
“Students at the two host schools acted as tour guides to share brilliant examples of school environmental initiatives. This included market gardens, recycling and organics collection, energy saving messages and student green events. Teachers on the Eco Tour were also given opportunities to learn about integrating sustainability into their classroom activities.”
Both Merici College and Daramalan College are leading Actsmart Schools, celebrated for embracing sustainability and making it a focus within their grounds and the curriculum.
Merici College has implemented many environmental initiatives including providing non-packaged lunches served on reusable plates and cutlery at the school canteen, reducing the volume of waste going to landfill.
Daramalan College highlighted how to use a waste audit to drive whole school behaviour change.
