Think safety this long weekend: Takata airbag recall

Released 29/03/2018

Before hitting the road this Easter long weekend, Canberrans are reminded to take the five minutes to check their vehicle is not impacted by the compulsory Takata airbag recall.

A quarter of all vehicles in the ACT are thought to be affected, including vehicles manufactured by Honda, Toyota, Jeep, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Lexus, Ferrari and Nissan.

To date, faulty Takata airbags are said to be responsible for at least 23 reported deaths and 230 injuridies worldwide.

“Airbags are not something we often think about until they get deployed in a crash,” Minister for Consumer Affairs and Road Safety Shane Rattenbury said.

“Unfortunately in the case of a vehicle fitted with faulty Takata airbags, the outcomes of a crash can be catastrophic.

“However, by doing a quick online check to make sure your vehicle didn’t have faulty airbags, you can avoid unnecessary harm to yourself and your family,” Mr Rattenbury said.

Canberrans can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting www.act.gov.au/airbag. While vehicle manufacturers should be contacted in the first instance Access Canberra can help answer any questions on 13 22 81.
