The ACT Government is encouraging Canberrans to be active participants in the fight against fraud as International Fraud Awareness Week commences this Sunday.
Since January 2019, ScamWatch has reported that the ACT has seen:
- Canberrans report 4,323 scams to ScamWatch with a loss of over $2.2 million.
- Romance and online dating scams continuing to be one of the most financially devastating with Canberrans losing $1,056,996.
- Canberrans lose nearly $200,000 to investment scams.
- Attempts to gain personal information being the most reported scam type with 1,392 so far this year.
In 2019, fraud is predicted to cost Australians more than $500 million - a record year for proceeds of fraud.
“Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated and taking advantage of developments in technology and the increasing number of people conducting business online. Access Canberra statistics show that at least one scam per month is reported to their website,” Minister for Consumer Affairs Shane Rattenbury said today.
“To avoid being a victim of fraud, Canberrans should do their research before big purchases or enlisting services from a contractor or business. Checking rating websites and online reviews can be a great way to identify trustworthy service providers.”
Consumers should read contracts or terms and conditions carefully before signing or agreeing; exercising care when shopping online; and avoid providing personal details, passwords or login details to anyone.
