Next generation determined for climate action

Released 28/11/2019

Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury has today thrown his support behind ACT students who have rallied for climate action on the lawns of Parliament House.

The School Strike 4 Climate protest is part of a global movement to take action on climate change. Minister Rattenbury will address students as part of ‘classroom’ sessions on climate science and democracy.

“Climate change is the challenge of our generation. Our future depends on the decisions before us today – cutting emissions, leaving coal in the ground, and embracing the renewables revolution,” Minister Rattenbury said today.

“The ACT was the first Australian state or territory to declare a climate emergency. As part of this, the ACT Government is committed to doing what it can to combat the effects of climate change and create a more sustainable planet.

“It is fantastic to see our region’s youth gathered today to learn and take further action. Their generation will soon be the decision makers that will shape our future.

“But it’s not just students who are passionate about this issue. Nearly 90% of our community recognise climate change as one of this generation’s most pressing challenges.

“The ACT is the nation’s climate action capital, and we are delivering on our promise of achieving 100% renewable electricity in the Territory. We also have a legislated target to deliver zero net emissions by 2045 at the latest – in step with climate science.

“The recently released Climate Change Strategy and Living Infrastructure Plan also outline our next steps to achieve this goal and to create a resilient and zero emissions Canberra.”
