Recycle your mobile phone and help attempt a world record

Released 14/11/2019

As part of a Canberra-first world record attempt, Canberrans are encouraged to donate their used mobile phones and technology in a collective recycling effort.

As part of National Recycling Week, today the ACT Government’s Actsmart team will be collectingmobile phones for a world record attempt at City Walk between 8.00am – 8.00pm.

Accepted items include:

  • Mobile phones (including personal digital assistants that are mobiles)
  • Mobile phone accessories (including ear pieces, car kits, cases, etc.)
  • Mobile batteries of all kinds
  • Mobile phone chargers
  • Wireless USB mobile devices.

“It may come as a surprise to most, but mobile phone parts can often be recycled. Mobile phones contain many different materials including glass, aluminum, gold, silver and copper, that can be extracted and reused – for example, in products such as jewelry and new batteries,” Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said today.

“We are calling on the public, community groups, schools and businesses to get behind this Canberra-first world record attempt. If you have old mobile phones or chargers at home collecting dust or clogging up your cupboards, be sure to drop these in to the Actsmart team.”
