Public and community housing upgraded with solar and sustainability improvements

Released 22/05/2020 - Joint media release

The ACT Government has allocated $365,000 to undertake solar and sustainability upgrades on public and community housing as part of the government’s fast-tracked infrastructure projects to support the local economy.

Common Ground Gungahlin, a multi-unit property in Kaleen and a further 10 properties which are leased to community organisations will benefit from these upgrades, including draughtproofing and the installation of rooftop solar panels.

These properties provide housing and support to ACT community members experiencing the greatest vulnerability.

Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry said, "This project will deliver lower electricity costs for people in our community who are most in need of support, particularly during the coming winter when electricity bills often grow.

“The ACT Government leads Australia in investing in public and community housing and supporting people to have a roof over their head.

“We’re extending our support through projects like this so that people experiencing vulnerability have the chance to get ahead.

“This project is part of the governments economic survival package that is providing jobs for Canberrans, while upgrading and renewing infrastructure across the city,” Minister Berry said.

Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Shane Rattenbury said, “These upgrades demonstrate how environmental initiatives can also support local jobs, businesses and the Canberra community.

“As well as helping residents and community groups, the sustainability upgrades help the ACT on its goal of addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero,” Minister Rattenbury said.

Responding to the spread of COVID-19 is one of the greatest challenges our city has ever faced. Already, the ACT Government has created hundreds of new jobs, fast tracked projects and increased funding to keep local businesses going.

The government is also pulling every lever at our disposal to ensure the right support is provided to those that need it most.
