During National Safe Work Month, aviation teams at Canberra Airport will participate in Airport Safety Week by participating in a number of activities to promote a safe and healthy workplace.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Safety, Suzanne Orr launched this year's Airport Safety Week which reminds aviation teams thatthey can contribute to creating a positive environment in the workplace and for travellers.

"Airport Safety Week is a great initiative by the Australian and New Zealand Airport Association. This year's theme 'Our Airport Our Community' reminds aviation teams how they contribute to creating safe, healthy and happy workplaces as well as positive experiences for travellers."

"October is National Safe Work Month and during this month I want people to feel empowered to be a safety champion. This includes keeping an eye out for colleagues and including time in your day to check in on your own mental and physical wellbeing," Minister Orr said.

Aviation teams at Canberra Airport will take part in a range of activities highlighting safety and wellbeing.

Canberra Airport Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Byron said the airport takes great pride in Airport Safety Week each year.

“Airport Safety Week is a great initiative that helps airport employees learn more about critical safety operations, forges new bonds with other teams and focuses on wellbeing."

"We all have a responsibility to look out for our colleagues, their safety and their wellbeing, and we see those positive results in the excellent experience we create for our customers" Mr Byron said.

ACT Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones said that it was important for employers to show leadership when it comes safety. The Canberra Airport Group is a good example of showing initiative and leadership when it comes to worker safety, as shown by their strong involvement with Airport Safety Week.

"Safety should be an employer's number one priority – ensuring that the safety and well-being of your workers is the key to meeting your legislative responsibilities. This includes their psychological well-being as well as the physical aspects of the workplace - these elements go hand-in-hand" Mr Jones said.
