ACT Government and Carers ACT offer Canberrans a Winter Wonderland

Released 13/07/2020

Minister for Community Services and Facilities, Suzanne Orr MLA and Nexus Human Services today distributed Winter Wonderland Activity Packs in Kaleen to offer some family winter fun, promote community resilience, and to celebrate the contribution of carers in the ACT as part of Canberra’s Community Recovery efforts.

The packs, sponsored by Carers ACT include activities and resources for children, Know Your Neighbour cards, Carers ACT Information Sheet and telehealth resources. Today’s Kaleen distribution was conducted by volunteers from Nexus, who offer a wide range of support services for individuals with mental health issues or other disabilities in their journey of finding employment. Support services assist individuals to maintain employment and develop career aspiration.

Minister for Community Service and Families, Suzanne Orr MLA said the COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impact on our community and way of life.

“Not everyone is able to enjoy traditional winter activities and connecting with everyone they usually would over school holidays, especially if you or your loved ones are self-isolating. These packs are a fun, accessible way to mark the season.” Minister Orr said.

“I would like to acknowledge the work of Carers ACT in supporting carers in our community. The role that carers play is vital to supporting Canberrans—not only during times of crisis, but in everyday life. During the bushfires and this pandemic I have been touched by the stories I have heard about carers going above and beyond to ensure they continue to support those who are most in need – we could not do this without you.”

“I also recognise that this week, with the situation evolving in Victoria and new cases of COVID-19 presenting in the ACT, that some Canberrans may be feeling anxious. If you are struggling and would like assistance, there are a range of support services that can be found on the Connect in Canberra website.”

The Winter Wonderland Community Activity Packs are being distributed in several neighbourhoods across Canberra, and are also available at local shopping centres, ACT libraries and through community organisations. The packs were created in a partnership between the ACT Government and Carers ACT to help foster community resilience and offer information in this time of social isolation.

The packs are available for download from the Connect in Canberra website.
