Local community services organisations will be able to provide better support to Canberrans after more than $1.3 million dollars was given to the community sector to help adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.
$1 million dollars was given to 36 local organisations through the ACT Government's COVID Rapid Response Grants program. There were also 31 successful applicants through the annual Participation (Digital Communities) Grants program, totalling $200,000 and a total of $128,000 has been awarded to 21 projects through the Community Support and Infrastructure Grants (CSIG) program.
Through this funding, successful applicants will be adopting innovative and essential business changes, including staff safety fixtures and technology requirements to continue operations remotely.
Minister for Community Service and Facilities, Suzanne Orr MLA said that community organisations play a vital role in ensuring people can access information, support and direct assistance to navigate the many impacts of COVID-19.
"The community services organisations are under increasing pressure to alter their daily practices to align with new standard operating procedures and ensure the safety of their employees and clients. For example, to ensure the continued delivery of vital services, some organisations needed to purchase video conferencing software, ICT technology, plexiglass screens or put in place other arrangements.'
"As we cautiously move into a recovery space, these grants rounds give Canberra community organisations the opportunity to put forward projects that will enhance their capability to deliver programs and services to the community.
"This includes developing digital platforms and purchasing digital equipment to keep people connected, undertaking online training and building a community shelter and seating.'
"I am encouraged by how all sectors in the Canberra community are working positively and collaboratively to support people through this significant challenge and I am pleased that through this funding we are able to continue supporting the community through this crisis.' Minister Orr said.
Some of the successful applications include funding for the Lifeline Crisis Support project, and contribution to the Domestic and Family Violence Support for Adolescents project. Funding has also been provided for IT equipment for staff to be able to work remotely at Community Services 1 and Woden Community Service Incorporated.
Capital Region Community Services Limited has received funding to purchase IT equipment and facilitate digital literacy for their clients and the Canberra Police Community Youth Club Inc is receiving funding to contribute to hiring multi-seater vehicles to transport at risk youth during social distancing provisions.
