Enjoy activities at the Arboretum these school holidays

Released 11/04/2013

Join in the hive of activity at the National Arboretum Canberra during the school holidays, with fun activities for children to take part in and over 104 tree species for them to discover.

"Canberra's newest major attraction is open each day throughout the April school holidays," said Jason Brown, Manager, National Arboretum Canberra. "There will be two special activities on offer during the first week of the break to give children something unique to do.

"From Monday 15 April 2013 to Friday 19 April 2013 children will have their imagination and creativity awakened with stories in the forest, daily at 10 am. This 45 minute activity will be filled with tales about trees and the natural environment and will conclude with a hands-on craft activity."

Mr Brown said the stories in the forest activity is for children in preschool to grade two and costs $5 per child.

"There will also be a create your own terrarium activity for children aged nine to twelve. A terrarium is a miniature garden in a small glass or plastic container and participants will be able to make their very own using plants, rocks, wood and more.

"Why not explore the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection at the Arboretum before taking part in the activity and draw some inspiration from the miniature trees on display.

"Participants will be able to take their terrarium home at the end of the session and will be given some tips on how to maintain their miniature garden.

"There will be three 'make your own terrarium' sessions held from 2 pm to 3 pm daily between Tuesday 16 April 2013 and Thursday 18 April 2013. It costs $15 per child to participate."

Bookings for both activities are essential and places are limited, so call 6207 8156 to ensure you don't miss a spot.

"While you and your children are at the Arboretum to take part in the fun activities on offer go in search of the Australian natives and various rare and endangered trees from around the world that have been planted at the 250 hectare site.

"The Village Centre will also be open between 9 am and 4 pm daily, offering panoramic views over Canberra and a series of interactive displays which reveal the stories, people, wildlife and science of the Arboretum's symbolic forests."
