Territory and Municipal Services wishes to advise the public that, weather permitting, controlled burns will continue across Canberra today, Tuesday 17 December 2013, at the following locations:
- O'Connor Ridge Nature Reserve, adjacent to Dryandra Street, O'Connor
- Isaacs Ridge Nature Reserve, adjacent to Isaacs
- Aranda Spine.
Conditions were too wet following the weekend's rain to undertake a controlled burn in O'Connor, between Dryandra Street and Barry Drive.
Controlled burns will also be carried out at the following locations today:
- Gilmore, between Isabella Drive and the Monaro Highway
- Gordon, between Drakeford Drive and Woodcock Drive.
Like in all controlled burns, safety will be of paramount importance. Experienced fire managers, supported by trained fire-fighters, will conduct the burning operations.
Temporary smoke cover may occur and smoke may linger for a few days. Every effort is made to conduct burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke in the area.
The ACT Health Directorate advises that people with asthma, other chronic respiratory and/or chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by the smoke. People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties. Before burns are undertaken the appropriate authorities are advised.
