Libraries ACT is getting on board The Yellow Van Christmas Appeal again this December and is encouraging the Canberra community to help out too by donating food items to the good cause.
"Each library branch will have collection points set up which will run from 1 December to 24 December 2013, and we are asking the community to donate cans or packets of non-perishable food," said Karen Hansen, Manager of Operations, Libraries ACT.
"All food will be donated to The Yellow Van food rescue service which provides food to almost 90 charities and refuges across Canberra and the Yass Valley.
"The Yellow Van provides an important service to many less fortunate Canberrans, so we are hoping the community will join us in helping those in need this holiday season.
"We all tend to overestimate the food we buy when catering for a Christmas party or gathering with family and friends. Whether it's that extra can of tinned fruit or packet of biscuits, I encourage Canberrans to take a look in their pantry for anything suitable they can provide. All donations are welcome.
"If each library member were to bring in just a single item thousands of donations would be received. This would be an enormous effort and would help cater to the Christmas peak that The Yellow Van experiences.
"I encourage library members to use this as a means to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Christmas is, after all, the time for giving, and what better gift to give than the donation of food to those in the community who need it most.
"Please remember, though, that we are unable to accept damaged, broken or out-of-date items, perishable items, items requiring refrigeration, pet food or non-food items.
"To assist with the transportation of the food, the donation of boxes or reusable shopping bags would also be appreciated."
Ms Hansen said The Yellow Van Christmas Appeal will finish at 1 pm on Tuesday 24 December 2013 at which time all items collected will be distributed to the relevant charities.
