Get to know the stars of the Arboretum

Released 13/02/2015

The National Arboretum Canberra is extending its Sunday guided forest walks to give visitors more time to experience the vast array of forests, bird species and wildlife on offer at the facility.

"We are delighted to be able to offer this new experience at our wonderful Arboretum, with our Sunday 10am tours extended to one hour," Jocelyn Plovits, Chair of the Friends of the Arboretum, said.

"The walks will be undertaken by one of our 250 trained volunteers who are a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about the Arboretum.

"Participants can wander through our most impressive, least-known forests, and learn the history of the different tree species and their role at the Arboretum. During the walks you may discover birds and other wildlife as well as some very rare and endangered trees, some of which no longer exist in their natural habitat.

"The tours are not only a great way to see the forests but also the Canberra cityscape, as you stop at various points to enjoy the stunning views on offer and the various sculptures across the Arboretum."

The Arboretum's Executive Manager, Stephen Alegria, said the walks are a valuable addition to the range of visitor services available at the Arboretum.

"The Arboretum benefits greatly from the work of our Friends volunteers who support us and our ongoing development," Mr Alegria said.

"Our volunteer guides are able to offer visitors an educational and entertaining experience that we could not otherwise provide. These walks provide visitors with a more in-depth experience and will reveal some of the many secrets of the Arboretum and its forests."

Bookings are not required. Meet the guide near the information desk at the Village Centre. The walks cover hills and uneven ground and it is recommended you wear sturdy footwear and long pants.

Ms Plovits encouraged interested community members who want to contribute to the Arboretum to consider joining the Friends.
