Take your workout outdoors this Saturday

Take your workout outdoors this Saturday, 28 March 2015, and come along to a free 50 minute outdoor community fitness session at the John Knight Memorial Park fitness station from 10 am. 

"It is a frightening statistic that almost two-thirds of Canberrans are overweight or obese, but the good news is that you don't need a home gym or gym membership to get active," said Jane Carder, Manager, Place Management, City Services. 

"Get your outdoor fitness journey started this Saturday with local health and fitness trainer Lee Campbell who will show you how to get a full body workout using the equipment at the Belconnen fitness station. Come along with your runners on, a water bottle and the enthusiasm to give it a go. 

"The fitness station at John Knight Memorial Park is just one of the many outdoor fitness facilities available across the ACT, including fitness stations in Deakin, Crace, Chifley and Ainslie where fitness sessions will also be held throughout April. 

"Exercise and the great outdoors are a great combination. Not only do you get to breathe in the fresh air, but the natural environment has slopes and other obstacles that challenge your fitness routine. 

"If you can't wait till Saturday to get out and get active, get your outdoor fitness journey started now with the help of the Find fitness outdoors website (www.act.gov.au/outdoorfitness). 

"On the site you will find a map allowing you to search your local area for free outdoor fitness facilities located near you. You will also discover videos showing how to correctly use the facilities and the various exercises you can do using them. 

"Use the hashtag #CBRoutdoors to share your fitness journey with images and videos of your outdoor workout here in Canberra. Videos and images tagged #CBRoutdoors will be posted to the website, so you will be able to view videos shared by other Canberran's and continue to learn new places and new exercises. The best videos tagged with #CBRoutdoors by Monday 20 April 2015 will receive free personal training." 

Ms Carder said this program has been funded as part of the ACT Government's Healthy Weight Initiative which is designed to improve the health outcomes of Canberrans.
