City improvements continue to bring the new integrated transport network to life

Released 25/10/2018

Canberrans will see a dramatic difference in the heart of the city as we bring the new integrated transport network to life with a modern interchange for pedestrians, cyclists as well as bus and light rail commuters.

Work expands on Sunday 4 November to connect the signature light rail stop with an extended City Bus Station along Alinga Street West.

By getting the City Bus Station extension underway now we will be ready for the new transport network in 2019, with light rail and more frequent bus services in a modern interchange.

To prepare for the extension, minor investigation works will be conducted on the road surface and underground services today, Thursday 25 October. These works will require the temporary closure of car parks along Alinga Street between Northbourne Avenue and West Row/Moore Street on this day.

The first construction activity on Alinga Street is planned to take place on the quietest day of trade, Sunday 4 November. Road crews will repair the road surface to make it ready for new line marking.

This will require Alinga Street between Northbourne Avenue and Marcus Clarke Street to be closed for to all traffic from 8 am to 5 pm.

Parking spots will remain in place on Alinga Street as sign posted until 17 November when new five minute spots will open on the block between Moore and Marcus Clarke Streets, close to Australia Post, the Jolimont Centre and the ACT Health Clinic.

Buses will begin operating from Alinga Street West on Saturday 17 November.

We are delivering multiple construction projects simultaneously to minimise the length of disruptions. Northbourne Avenue works will be completed before Christmas, with the majority of small construction works on Alinga Street completed by January. The new bus shelters will be installed in mid 2019.

The construction works will make the Central Business District of Canberra more attractive, safer, easier to get around and more enjoyable for the public, which is great for business.

Regular notifications are being issued to businesses and residents as well as public notices on changed traffic and pedestrian conditions in the area.

If you are travelling by foot, vehicle or bike near Northbourne Avenue between London Circuit and Rudd Street, take extra care, slow down, follow the signs and stay safe.

We thank people for their patience as we undertake this work efficiently.
