WorkSafe ACT supporting local jobs

Released 08/09/2020

As part of the ACT Jobs and Economic and Recovery Plan to support local jobs, WorkSafe ACT this week welcomed four new staff members to its team, through funding received from the ACT Government’s Jobs for Canberrans Fund.

Jacqueline Agius, Work Health and Safety Commissioner, said the staff employed through the Jobs for Canberrans Fund will play an important role within WorkSafe ACT.

“Our new team members are already supporting inspectors with a range of duties, assisting with audits and inspections as part of our compliance program as well as administrative work, she said.

“This frees up our inspectors to spend more time on compliance and enforcement activities on the ground, so we can help improve work health and safety in local workplaces.”

The Jobs for Canberrans Fund has been established to offer work opportunities for those that have been significantly impacted by COVID-19. This includes people who previously relied on casual employment, international visa holders and international students.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Safety, Suzanne Orr, welcomed the announcement of the new WorkSafe ACT staff and recognised the important role they’ll play in improving workplace health and safety.

“The delivery of four new staff for WorkSafe ACT through the Jobs for Canberrans program will strengthen the day-to-day operations of the work health and safety regulator, Minister Orr said.

“These new staff will support WorkSafe ACT to conduct their important compliance and enforcement activities to improve work health and safety across Canberra.

“I am pleased to welcome these additional staff to WorkSafe ACT and I wish them well in their new careers.”

The program offers short-term employment opportunities across the ACT Public Service, with over 500 jobs already funded.

More information on the fund is available online.
