WorkSafe ACT supporting workforce equality in the safety industry

Released 09/09/2020

The newly established WorkSafe ACT has today launched a women’s committee for their staff, making a commitment to improve workforce equality.

Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius, said too often she sees discrimination and gender imbalance in workplaces, but it’s time to move forward and create better working environments.

“By setting up a women’s committee for our staff, we’re encouraging a more inclusive culture, not just in the workplace, but in our community; people should feel supported as recognised contributors to our organisation, she said.

“We recognise that equity and diversity contribute greatly to innovation, employee engagement and improved productivity in the workplace.”

Amanda Grey, who was recently appointed Deputy Work Health and Safety Commissioner, WorkSafe ACT, strongly encourages trying to reduce discrimination in the workplace.

“We strive to offer an inclusive working environment, with a culture where everyone is valued, respected and celebrated, Ms Grey said.

“Our women’s committee aims to build an understanding and appreciation of the needs of women, those who identify as women and people who are non-binary.

“We look forward to making progress in this space as we continue establishing the newly independent WorkSafe ACT.”

The women’s committee was formally launched by Minister for Women, Yvette Berry, Minister for Employment and Workplace Safety, Suzanne Orr, and Commissioner Jacqueline Agius.

Minister Orr said that the committee will have a positive impact on the culture of WorkSafe and the workplaces it regulates.

“WorkSafe’s new women’s committee will provide the regulator with an opportunity to support women within its own workforce and achieve balanced gender representation within its operations.

“The ACT Public Service and other statutory organisations are places where inclusion and diversity are embraced and I’m pleased to see the new, independent WorkSafe ACT implementing this fantastic initiative.”

Key speakers at the event also included influential women in the ACT community across sectors such as the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Public Service.

WorkSafe ACT is committed to supporting workforce equity and diversity and offering an inclusive workplace to staff.

The establishment of the women’s committee enables WorkSafe ACT to better deliver services to the community, in line with their strategic priorities.
