Canberra’s new state-of-the-art cricket training centre open in Phillip

Released 22/11/2017

Canberra has a new home for cricket training and administrative facilities with both indoor and outdoor areas now open for use by the community in Phillip.

It was great to visit the new facility yesterday afternoon, which will support Cricket ACT in its delivery of community and high performance programs for both female and male participants throughout the year.

As well as a new home for Cricket ACT’s offices, the facilities will also be a training hub for teams from the ACT, Southern and Western NSW. The facilities at Phillip will support pathway programs and will make a wonderful alternative training and playing location to Manuka Oval.

New features include outdoor cricket nets with turf wickets, an indoor centre with powerful lighting, four indoor synthetic wickets and dividing nets so training won’t be dictated to by the weather.

The ACT Government has committed $4.6 million to the project with AFL NSW/ACT, Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW and Cricket ACT together contributing $1.9 million.

It was great to have Cricket Australia’s Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland there for the opening yesterday.

Construction at Phillip began in February with the cricket facilities the first component to open today in a series of upcoming milestones. Four floodlight poles will be made operational in December, and next year an extension of the existing pavilion will open, providing AFL NSW/ACT with new offices and facilities. The playing surface at Phillip Oval has also been upgraded.

This new indoor centre and outdoor wicket area will provide players with wonderful training facilities to be used all year round by local teams as well as visiting state, national and touring sides.

I would like to congratulate the architects, Clarke Keller and ABA Construction Managers for building such an impressive facility and trust it will help to give players an edge to their game.
