Local Queen’s Baton Relay 2018 Baton Bearers announced

Released 18/10/2017

Today I announced the local Baton Bearers for Canberra’s leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay 2018.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games organisers today officially announced the nation’s capital will be the first destination for the Australian section of the relay, starting here on 25 January 2018. The start of the relay will also mark the 100-day countdown to the Games.

More than 70 Canberrans will carry the Queen’s Baton during ACT section of the relay.

Street-level and community celebration details for the two-day relay leg in Canberra will be announced on 17 November, providing Canberrans with a range of opportunities to engage with the Baton and be part of the exciting build up to the Games.

Across the country, Baton Bearers will take more than a million steps to bring the Baton to its final destination, the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

Since its launch from Buckingham Palace on 13 March 2017, the Baton has inspired athletes and fans across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe. Currently it is in Malaysia and is set to visit the remaining 15 Commonwealth nations in Asia and Oceania before arriving in Australia.

Two of the ACT’s Baton Bearers, John Wright and Samuel Freeman, joined me for the announcement today. It was wonderful to hear about their great work in the community and to share in their enthusiasm ahead of the relay next year.

The names of all nationwide Baton Bearers and the communities where they will carry the baton will be published today at www.gc2018.com/qbr
