New online space continues the drive towards gender equity in sport

Released 11/10/2017

The ACT Government has delivered another key election commitment with today’s official launch of HerCanberra ACTIVE.

As I talked sport with women and girls during 2016, one of the strongest themes to emerge was the need for an online hub, showcasing female stories and providing information for girls and women looking to participate more.

This was particularly the case for teenage girls, the age where participation tends to drop off but where staying physically active is so important to good physical and mental health.

The new ACTIVE hub and directory is a joint initiative between the ACT Government and HerCanberra with the government providing $100,000 over four years.

It’s a place for showcasing all that’s happening in female local sport and recreation and more broadly in health and wellbeing.

More than that, it will become a hub for practical information and a place for sports and clubs to share information and promote their events.

A toolkit was also launched today to assist local organisations to use the Hub and a HerCanberra Active Week is planned for November when sports will run a range of come and try activities across the ACT.

I want to thank the team at HerCanberra and I look forward to contributing to the discussion about how we can continue to work on getting more women and girls into sport and physical activity.
