Canberra GIANTS helping to inspire players of the future

Released 02/02/2018

After a successful debut season in last year’s new-look Australian Netball League (ANL), the Canberra GIANTS will be shooting big and inspiring young players again in 2018, with the team’s official launch today.

The ACT Government is proud to provide $130,000 in sponsorship to Netball NSW over three years (2018 to 2020) in support of GIANTS Netball playing matches in the ACT (one match per year), developing and promoting netball including through the Canberra GIANTS ANL program.

The Canberra GIANTS feature a mix of players from both the ACT and NSW and are one of eight teams contesting the ANL. Their alignment with Suncorp Super Netball franchise GIANTS Netball provides a direct pathway for local players and coaches to compete at the elite level.

Netball is a massive participation sport in Canberra, with passionate participants and great local associations supporting grass-roots participation.

The Canberra GIANTS continue to be an inspiration to our junior players, by paving a pathway for them to pursue a professional career in the sport.

Local juniors can see their favourite players in action on the court and young girls can see that being sporty, competitive and athletic is something to aspire to.

The Canberra GIANTS and GIANTS Netball will play a pre-season trial match at the AIS Training Hall tonight. Tickets cost $5, with all proceeds going to the Confident Girls Foundation which aims to provide opportunities for vulnerable girls to thrive through netball, helping to highlight and eliminate key drivers of gender bias.

2018 is set to be another massive year for women’s sport in this country and I wish the Canberra GIANTS every success when their 2018 ANL season commences in May.
