Our Watch - educating for respectful relationships

Released 06/03/2018

The Office of the Coordinator-General for Family Safety and Our Watch will this week run a series of Respectful Relationship Education sessions with stakeholders from across government and the community.

Our Watch and the Coordinator-General for Family Safety will present tools and resources which have been developed aimed at further embedding gender equality and respectful relationships into the workplace, in sport, and in schools.  The sessions being delivered this week are in addition to the range of domestic and family violence front line worker training that has been delivered across government already, or which is under development for delivery later this year.

Our Watch is the leading national organisation on the primary prevention of violence against women and their children. To effectively address violence against women and their children, long term sustainable social change is required. Primary prevention can facilitate this change through targeting the underlying gendered drivers of violence and build a culture where women and their children are valued, respected, and live free from violence.

Today Our Watch will deliver a tailored session with the Education Directorate on Respectful Relationships Education. The focus will be on the opportunities a whole school approach provides to address culture, policies and procedures to promote gender equity in the workplace. It will give students the skills to have safe, respectful and equal relationships, and teach young people to recognise and challenge gender stereotyping and violent supportive attitudes. Our Watch will also present on curriculum resources to assist in the delivery of Respectful Relationships Education in schools.

I look forward to hearing from Our Watch and I see these sessions as a valuable opportunity for the ACT Government and community to build knowledge and understanding about the important role primary prevention plays in reducing violence against women and their children.
