Promoting women’s safety and advancing gender equality

Released 13/08/2018

$180,000 in grants will be allocated to support individuals, organisations and community groups for innovative projects to improve the participation, health, wellbeing and safety of women in the ACT.

Of the thirty two grant applications received this year, eleven new projects have been funded.

Successful projects include:

  • Engaging younger women in the production of local information resources about sexual and reproductive health and safe relationships to help them identify where to go for reliable, trusted advice and what supports are available to them.
  • Production of a handbook on ACT Family Violence Orders and responding to domestic and family violence in the workplace to help guide employers support staff members experiencing family violence.
  • A culturally sensitive action plan to target and address violence against culturally and linguistically diverse women in the ACT.

All successful grant applications have demonstrated a clear alignment with the priorities of the ACT Women’s Plan 2016-26 or the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children 2011-2022.

In addition to announcing the successful grant recipients, I was also pleased to be able award two ‘She Leads Diploma Scholarships’ providing a 10 month leadership development with the YWCA.

The scholarships were targeted to women from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, and women with disability. Once completed, these two women will graduate with a Diploma of Leadership and Management.

The scholarships, and the women’s grants awarded today all work towards the goals contained in the ACT Women’s Plan which sets out a course of action to work towards gender equality. These targeted measures contribute to improving outcomes for women who are at heightened disadvantage due to intersecting forms of discrimination as a result of disability, race, age and socio-economic status.

The ACT Government continues its commitment to women and girls through supporting innovative programs that advance gender equality, address women’s safety and empower women to succeed. This work is bolstered this year by an additional $696,000 investment to drive outcomes in the women’s action plan right across government.
