Renewal program delivering new public housing

Released 13/07/2018

The ACT Government is working to deliver better outcomes for public housing tenants and the wider Canberra community in modern, efficient homes.

Right now there are 155 new dwellings under construction on four sites across Taylor and the Gungahlin Town Centre with 122 developed for public housing and 33 townhouses purchased by Defence Housing Australia (DHA).

The government holds a deep commitment to including public housing in Canberra suburbs. That’s why we have taken this opportunity for a good social mix with new public housing units developed, as part of the Public Housing Renewal Program, adjacent to housing for Australian Defence Force members and their families.

This will provide well-located, quality housing that is integrated into the wider community, just like all new public housing being developed across Canberra.

Through the Public Housing Renewal Program, the ACT Government will replace 1,288 dwellings to provide new homes for public housing tenants and improve the spread of public housing across Canberra.

The new development sites in the Gungahlin Town Centre are in close proximity to services, shops and transport connections. Once completed, the suburb of Taylor will include a public P-6 Primary School, new purpose-built playgrounds and local shops.

The delivery of 122 public housing units and sale of 33 townhouses to DHA is expected to occur by mid-2019.
