A nearly brand new Belconnen High School

Released 25/05/2019

The ACT Government invested more than $25.7 million to upgrade Belconnen High School. Today, the nearly unrecognisable school celebrated the completion of the impressive school modernisation works.

Delivered in multiple stages, the now complete work fulfils an initial 2015 ACT Budget commitment of $17.6 million for refurbishment works and a further $5.9 million, which was allocated in the 2017-18 ACT Budget for upgrades to technology areas, roof replacement and an outdoor learning and teaching environment.

The first stage of works involved the creation and conversion of some indoor learning spaces, landscaping and flexible outdoor learning spaces with shade structures, seating, a synthetic sports area and irrigated grass areas.

More recently, the second stage of the program refurbished the main school building, creating a range of modern learning and teaching spaces including various specialist learning spaces, woodwork and metalwork technology areas, breakout and outdoor areas, and a new roof.

The major works also delivered a new administration area and main entry, creating an open and inviting entrance to the school and were ready for the start of the 2019 school year.

Education is evolving and it’s important that the infrastructure keeps pace. These projects, and other completed works at Belconnen High School, are helping create learning spaces for students and teachers to thrive in.

Belconnen High School principal Dave McCarthy said the modernised facilities are creating a great sense of belonging and pride in the school.

“Our new school is an open and visible environment which is the most crucial element in changing the culture of the ‘traditional high school paradigm’.

“The open design changes the whole feel of the school, it just does not feel like a traditional school. The high visibility is what helps us to establish the strong learning culture,” Mr McCarthy said.

This extensive modernisation project will help ensure the government meets the future enrolment needs of the area, and Belconnen High School continues to be a school of choice for the local community.

The school modernisation program is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to ensuring all students attending public schools receive a high-quality education in contemporary learning and teaching environments.
