The ACT Government has continued its national leadership acting on climate change and driving a renewable energy future as the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) considers a National Hydrogen Strategy.
Acting Chief Minister, Yvette Berry MLA, said that introducing green hydrogen into the Australian energy mix could make an important contribution to achieving a net zero emissions future.
“The ACT Government has been leading the adoption of renewable energy through ambitious strategies being pursued over the past decade,” Minister Berry said.
Shane Rattenbury MLA, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, who today attended the COAG Energy Council meeting in Perth, sought on behalf of the ACT to amend the National Hydrogen Strategy to only support green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, and to exclude hydrogen generated from fossil fuels.
“While it is disappointing that the ACT’s proposal to only pursue green hydrogen was not supported by other jurisdictions, there is still an opportunity to choose green hydrogen,” Minister Rattenbury said.
“Green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, like wind and solar, is the way of the future. The ACT Government will continue to advocate for green hydrogen and a transition to a low carbon economy in Australia.”
“We welcome the certification standards that will be introduced for domestic and international hydrogen markets. These standards will clearly show the emissions intensity of hydrogen enabling consumers to choose zero emissions green hydrogen.”
