Empowering teachers, delivering on the Future of Education

Released 02/08/2019

Today the ACT Government has released the First Phase Implementation plan for the Future of Education Strategy. The strategy outlines a 10-year plan for education in the ACT, providing a roadmap to build off the great things happening in ACT schools and ensure our continued focus and investment to achieve the best future for all ACT's children—whether they attend government or non-government schools.

The First Phase Implementation Plan outlines clear, tangible actions and commitments for education over the next 18 months across six priorities:

  • Strengthening inclusive education
  • Giving students more of a say
  • Supporting a workforce of the future
  • Community schools
  • Giving young people the best start
  • Focus the system on what matters most

The ACT Government is investing $4.2 million over four years on reforms arising from the Future of Education Strategy, including strengthening the Positive Behaviours for Learning program across ACT public schools and initial resourcing to support complex case management.

Importantly, the plan demonstrates a clear commitment to supporting the school workforce throughout all stages of their career.

This commitment includes 30 Master of Education scholarships a year over the coming years, the provision of co-ordinated professional experience placements for pre-service teachers along with a comprehensive mentor training program for new government teachers that ensures supports are in place the moment they arrive in the classroom.

The ACT Government continues to invest in school leadership through reforms including the Empowered Learning Professionals Leadership Plan; a multi-faceted approach to strengthening the leadership capabilities of all ACT public school leaders at the Principal, Deputy Principal and Executive Teacher level.

Additionally, the ACT Government will increase the number of teachers certified at the Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher standard by 10 teachers by next year, as well as release a whole-of-jurisdiction workforce strategy to ensure the ACT attracts and retains expert educators across all schooling sectors.

The ACT Government is committed to delivering the best possible education for Canberra students, empowering teachers and learning professionals to thrive, and working with school communities to ensure the best possible outcomes for families.

The Future of Education Strategy will give all children and young people in the ACT the very best chance of a bright future.
