The ACT has reached a major milestone today with the opening of Ginninderry’s display village, GX-Ginninderry Experience, showcasing 16 homes, sustainability initiatives, a local arts trail, turf and environmental controls and the ‘Mini-G’ tiny house.
Ginninderry has a very important role in meeting the demand for diverse and flexible housing in the West Belconnen region over the coming years.
The first suburb within Ginninderry, Strathnairn, is set to have approximately 1,500 dwellings with a mix of larger blocks for families and compact, easy to maintain blocks and dwellings for those wanting a smaller scale lifestyle.
Planned facilities for Strathnairn include new school, shops and new community infrastructure, such as halls, childcare centres and medical centres.
Ginninderry is the region’s first ‘6 Star Green Star – Communities’ rated development and the community can come along and experience the unique and fully furnished 27sqm ‘tiny house’ and a zero-energy home.
Ginninderry is also experimenting with irrigated versus non-irrigated turf which is on display including a grass driveway as well as other sustainability features including solar energy packages, double glazing, electric vehicle charging points and low energy lighting.
Outside of the village itself, Ginninderry sits alongside more than 590 hectares of conservation area along the Murrumbidgee River in West Belconnen which will be protected by a new Conservation Corridor Trust established by the ACT Government.
One of the earlier projects of the Trust will be to restore river access and to return safe access. This direct contribution model sets a new precedent for greenfields development in the region, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
The corridor is an important natural asset crossing the ACT-NSW border and home to protected fauna and flora, including the Pink-tailed Worm-lizard and Yellow Box Red Gum Grassy Woodlands.
It is also home to the Little Eagle, as marked by the new Little Eagle Glyph sculpture on the entry road to Ginninderry, serving as an important reminder of the local environment.
Ginninderry has also worked closely with the local arts community over recent years and will use the display village as a platform for showcasing the work of the arts community. Over 100 pieces will be on display throughout the village and available for purchase.

Ginninderry is a Joint Venture between the ACT Government (60%) and the Riverview Developments Pty Ltd (40%) and will deliver approximately 11,500 dwellings over a 37 year period. Ginninderry stretches from the north western suburbs of Canberra (Holt and Macgregor) across the ACT/NSW border into a part of the Yass Valley. It is bounded on two sides by the Murrumbidgee River and Ginninderra Creek.
