Participation key to breaking social barriers

Released 08/04/2019

The ACT Government is committed to building an inclusive and equitable city and is seeking proposals from individuals or organisations to identify and deliver creative and innovative ideas to help more people in our community participate in sport, recreational or physical activities.

The ACT Government’s Participation Innovation Fund will invest $200,000 in support for up to four initiatives ($50,000 each) designed to remove participation barriers to get more Canberrans engaged in physical activity and engaged with the local community.

Canberra is a sports loving city, with great facilities, open spaces and a history of many athletes and teams achieving great things both nationally and internationally. While the ACT is largely very active, there are still pockets of the community that remain underrepresented both in sports and general physical activities.

Statistics show that only 65 per cent of Canberrans are active more than three times per week. Participation data consistently shows that girls often move away from sport in their teens. Frequent participation (three or more times a week) is notably reduced for disadvantaged households, people with a disability, families with children under 15 or households that speak a language other than English at home.

The government is committed to addressing barriers for those not participating or not participating enough in activities, and for more members of the community to share the social, physical and mental benefits physical activity and participation can provide.

Sport offers a vehicle to improve gender equality, break cultural barriers, and improve social outcomes for the community.

The proposals do not need to be confined to sport and will need to outline how the project responds directly to community needs and demonstrate how community members will be engaged.

Proposal submissions are now open and will close on 3 May 2019. More information about how to submit a proposal can be found on the Sport and Recreation website at: www.sport.act.gov.au
