Reducing violence against women and their children

Released 29/11/2019

The ACT Government today released a local implementation plan for the fourth and final action plan that delivers on the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-22.

The release of this plan coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November and the international 16 Days of Activism Campaign (16 Days). This year the theme for 16 Days is ‘ending gender-based violence in the world of work’.

Ending violence against women requires strong partnerships across all levels of government and community. It requires initiatives that equip the community to respond appropriately and to build more respectful communities and workplaces.

The ACT Government is supporting the work of the National Plan by developing and implementing an Domestic and Family Violence Training Strategy for ACT Government staff, including frontline workers. This work recognises the workplace is an important setting for preventing and responding to domestic and family violence and supporting affected people.

Other ACT initiatives in the Implementation Plan also respond to national priorities which include:

  • Prevention: Funding local organisations through the Women’s Safety Grants to deliver community-led initiatives,
  • Supports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and families: Partnering with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to develop community-led and family-centred responses,
  • Responses to diverse lived experience of women and children: Delivering a ‘listening and learning’ project to listen to and understand the diverse experiences and needs of children and young people affected by domestic and family violence,
  • Responses to sexual violence and harassment: Implementing the Child Safe Standards as recommended by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child sexual Abuse; and
  • Improving service system responses: Continuing to deliver the Family Safety Hub to bring together expertise across sectors and people with lived experience to try, test and learn innovative responses to domestic and family violence.

As new initiatives and priorities emerge, the ACT implementation plan will be refreshed to reflect the needs of the community.

The ACT remains committed to ending all violence against women and their children and will continue to work closely with partners to promote a culture of gender equality in our workplaces, schools, and all community settings.
