Tenant needs come first in housing

Released 03/07/2019

The first steps of the new Growth and Renewal Program  has begun with making sure tenants are in a home that best suits their needs.

In October 2018 the ACT Government made a commitment  through the ACT Housing Strategy to invest $100 million into the growth and  renewal of the public housing portfolio.

In May 2019 the ACT Government built on that commitment  through the release of the Growing and Renewing Public Housing 2019-24 plan  that set out how the government will renew 1000 homes and add 200 homes to the  public housing stock over 5 years.

The $100 million investment will enable the government to add 200 homes to  the portfolio and set in motion the sale and renewal of old public housing  properties to generate an expected $500 million that will be reinvested into  growing and renewing public housing stock.

A large part of the ACT Governments Growth and Renewal Program is making  sure that tenants are in housing that best suits their needs.

Part of the first group of tenants moving as part of the program are Mr and  Mrs Renton, who have lived in public housing for the past 38 years. With their  children growing up and moving out, the Rentons found themselves in a house  that no longer met their needs and was becoming difficult to maintain.

Mrs Renton said that she and her husband kept an open mind throughout the  relocation process when approached to take part in the program and felt  supported before, during and after their move.

Now settled into their new adaptable home that will allow them to age in  place, the Rentons are very happy to be close to their family and part of this  new community.

The Rentons are one of four families who have already settled into their new  homes. Their previous properties are being redeveloped to grow and renew  Housing ACT stock, with plans for the four properties to be replaced by eight  new energy efficient and adaptable homes for future tenants.

Over the  five year life of the Program, the ACT Government will deliver 1,200 new homes  built for public housing tenants, which includes an extra 200 homes for people  on the housing register.

Through  this $600 million Growth and Renewal Program, the ACT Government will  improve tenant experience,  provide more public housing and contribute to building a progressive and  inclusive city that supports vibrant local communities.
