Waramanga oval winter-sport ready

Released 08/04/2019

The ACT Government has completed works to upgrade Waramanga sportsground in time for the winter season. Local residents, community groups and sporting teams can now enjoy a revitalised oval, upgraded pavilion and better amenities.

These upgrades included a number of improvements to the facilities that will ensure the Waramanga sportsground continues to serve its local community into the future.

The changing rooms, toilets and canteen have been upgraded to improve amenity and functionality, as well as a new water refill station and covered barbeque area.

The upgrades feature a number of smart technologies and sustainable design including remote activation of external doors and the sportsground floodlighting systems, remote monitoring of waste levels and efficient LED internal and external lighting. All the existing benches have been replaced with seating made from environmentally friendly recycled material.

In addition to the physical upgrades, Waramanga oval now sports a new mural on the pavilion and artwork painted on the sportsground light towers by a local indigenous artist and school children.

The ACT Government engaged local Indigenous artist Kristie Peters from Yarrundhamarra Creations who worked with local students and teachers of Arawang Primary School and members of Khaamburra Netball to paint the pavilion and nearby sportsground light towers.

The new artwork adds a vibrant splash of colour to the building and provided a great opportunity for the students of Arawang Primary School to contribute to their community and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

Community ovals such as the Waramanga sportsground are an important part of Canberra’s sporting infrastructure, providing important community hubs, encouraging families to stay active and providing a place for young Canberrans to grow from grassroots to elite sporting if that’s their dreams.
