Helping tenants access activities and connect with the community

Released 01/08/2020

The ACT Government is encouraging Canberra’s social housing tenants to apply for the latest round of Tenant Participation Grants to help get involved in activities and connect with the community.

Since COVID-19 began, life has changed in many ways. To better support connection with the community, the 2020-21 program has been expanded to include digital classes and memberships.

This expanded program will support tenants to get involved and stay connected with the community in their chosen activity, whether that be online, or activities that have been adapted to COVID-19 restrictions. As well as provide opportunities for personal and professional development.

This is a great opportunity for public and community housing tenants to get creative and try something new during this time when people aren’t out and about as much or where some activities haven’t been able to start back up yet.

Grants of up to $400 are available to help tenants participate in a range of digital, sporting, arts, cultural, education, employment and training activities. Eligible activities will be anything that is a social activity, an activity to gain new or improve old skills, education and work activities.

Examples include:

  • A digital membership for any online painting class, including those face-face classes which have moved online due to COVID-19.
  • Music classes and instrument
  • Sewing course and materials
  • Cooking classes and relevant utensils
  • Communication skills or language course
  • Training to support friends or family, for example domestic or family violence response training or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • Course fees at CIT
  • Career planning and coaching, training and conferences
  • Childcare fees for you to attend a course

Grants open 9:00am Monday 3rd August, and close on Monday 14th September 2020, 5:00pm. For guidelines and more information visit: www.communityservices.act.gov.au/home/grants
